Daniel Malsch discovered the guitar at age twelve. He began writing songs and playing in bands at fourteen and never looked back. Anything other than music has never been an option for Dan. He’s a self-taught songwriter, engineer, mixer, and producer. In 1998, Dan constructed his own studio, Soundmine Recording Studios. He has been turning out indie and major label quality recordings ever since. Some of Malsch’s clients at Soundmine Recording include Tantric (SMG), Forever the Sickest Kids (Universal), The Naked Brothers Band (Sony), Doro Pesch (SPV), Simone (Koch), Bigwig (Fearless), Punchline (Fueled By Ramen), TGL (Oort), Lifer (Universal/ Republic), Split Fifty (Masquerade), Libby Johnson (Wrong) and many more. Dan, beyond producing and mixing, has collaborated with many talented artists, musicians, and producers at his studio in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. the list includes Toby Wright (Alice in Chains, Three Doors Down, Korn), Steve Lyon (The Cure, Depeche Mode, Ramon), Joe West (Cash Money Millionaires, Dream), Shep Goodman (LFO, Bayside, Mandy Moore), Daniel Wise (Scissor Sisters, Secret Machines), and Brett Hestla.
Daniel Wise was born and raised in pick-up truck and shotgun land in the Appalachian Mountains. Like everything else in Dan's life, his production career developed in an unorthodox way. He didn't come up the ladder in a large urban studio. His introduction into the music business came as an Artist where he lead an 80’s new wave band that toured heavily on the East Coast and opened for the likes of Cheap Trick and Tom Petty. Dan always preferred the recording side of being an artist and decided to move to New York; purchased some recording equipment and set up a tiny home studio in Hell's Kitchen where he proceeded to record demos for everyone under the sun. Dan is a producer first, and when he felt that he needed to get away from programming and step up his live chops, he used his demo savings to rent a commercial space in Chelsea, which he turned into a studio, and slowly built up to eventually include his dream-desk - a 1973 Neve 8038, that happened to be the original board from the Kink's KONK Studios. Six years later, Dan built The Shed on Third Avenue in NYC. He upgraded his desk to an AMEK 9098i to facilitate more complex mixing schemes, but couldn't part with the Neve, so he racked the entire board and put both consoles in his control room. Apparently though, that still wasn't enough. In his continuing efforts to push the envelope in life, Daniel acquired 24 channels of discreet API mic pres and eqs complete with an original power supply. In March of 2008—after the sale of the Shed Building, Daniel moved his entire control room to Soundmine Recording Studios in Pennsylvania, where he has teamed up with Daniel Malsch both studio-wise, and as the production team, Daniel and Daniel. Dan brings a great deal to the table when making a record. Aside from his talents as a producer and engineer, Dan is a very talented songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. As an artist, he conveys a certain sensitivity when working on a project, and describes his goal when making a record as staying invisible. "I don't have a signature sound, my signature is bringing the utmost out of the artist. My sound is not part of the equation, I just try to capture the artist at those moments when they are at their best, in the best possible way both artistically and sonically." Daniel has done over 100 records with artists such as SCISSOR SISTERS for Universal, THE SECRET MACHINES for Warner Brothers, EVEN THE ODD for Wrong Records, THE EXIT for Windup, and critically acclaimed records for 22 BRIDES for Universal. He also produced two albums for MACEO PARKER (WAR/EFA), projects that involved performances by ANI DIFRANCO, JAMES TAYLOR, and PRINCE, in addition to producing and co-writing several tracks with JOAN OSBORNE. Dan also produced the debut album for Danish recording artist MARIE FRANK (BMG) who won 4 European Grammies including Best Pop Album, Best New Artist, and Best Female Vocals. Daniel has recently or is currently producing records for Libby Johnson (acclaimed singer/songwriter formerly of 22 Brides), Michael Wolff (quoted as “…one of today’s best jazz composers…”), The Jones Street Boys for Smith Street Records, and The Naked Brothers Band for Sony/Columbia.
